At least 19 skeletons have been stolen from a graveyard at Pirganj Upazila in the Thakurgaon district on Friday and Saturday.

The skeletons were stolen from Pirdangi Graveyard in the Pirganj municipal area.

Jahangir Hossain, a local inhabitant who visited the graveyard on Saturday morning, said, "I went to the graveyard to bury the body of my grandmother-in-law. After the burial, I noticed some clothes were left at the graveyard. I was afraid of those."

"I later called some people, and when they arrived, I went close to the clothes and discovered that they were towels, trousers, and other types of dresses.

Then, we discovered that the fences of some tombs had been broken, and graves had been dug. We discovered that skeletons from 19 graves had been stolen," he said.

Another eyewitness, Anwar Hossain, said clothes may have belonged to the skeleton lifters.

When contacted, Jahangir Alam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Pirganj Police Station, told the Daily Sun that the graves were seen dug, but they could not confirm if the skeletons were stolen or not.

"We are suspecting that something certainly happened. Otherwise, why were the tombs dug?" he said.
