A two-year-old girl was killed in an accidental ‘police firing’ at Ranisankail Upazila in Thakurgaon on Wednesday.
The baby on her mother's lap was killed when police fired bullets to disperse the supporters of member candidates of Bachor Union Parishad polls as they were locked in a clash over the election result.
Eyewitnesses said that the mother with her baby went to know the result of the election at the centre where the supporters of two rival member candidates—Abdul Jalil and Faizul Islam—were locked in a clash.
The on-duty policemen fired bullets to bring the situation under control. One of the bullets pierced the head of the baby, killing her on the spot. Sohel Sultan Zulkar Nayen, upazila nirbahi officer of Ranisankail Upazila, said that the baby died in the police fire.
He said that police were forced to fire to bring the situation under control.
When contacted, Thakurgaon Superintendent of Police Jahangir Hossain told the Daily Sun that they were not certain the baby died as a result of a bullet fired from the arms of police.
He claimed that those involved in clashes threw large chunks of brick and stone.
