Attempt to dodge Tk 20.48 crore revenue in two consignments

More foreign liquor, cigarettes seized

CHATTOGRAM: Customs officials found foreign liquor and cigarette in the last two consignments imported under false declaration at Chattogram Port.

The importer attempted to dodge a revenue amount of Tk 20.48 crore through the consignments.

With this amount included, the syndicate of the criminals tried to evade a total of Tk 57.63 crore though five such consignments.

On information, the customs authorities seized the two consignments at the port yard on Monday.

The consignments were imported in the names of Dong Jin Industrial (BD) Company Limited of Uttara EPZ in Nilphamari and VIP Industries Bangladesh Pvt Limited of Mongla EPZ in Bagerhat, said Deputy Commissioner (DC) Saiful Hoque of the Customs Audit, Investigation and Research (AIR) Wing. The declarations of the consignments were for raw materials polypropylene resin and textured yarn, he said.

Inventory of the consignments was conducted at CFS Shed of New-mooring Container Terminal of the port.

A total of 31,492.50 litres of liquor in 2,858 cartons and 1060,000 pieces of contraband cigarette were found in the two consignments.

Earlier, three other consignments of foreign liquor imported with false declaration and IP fraudulence were also seized from Sonargaon area in Narayanganj and Port yard on Saturday and Sunday.

The Saturday’s consignments were imported in the names of Hashy Tiger Co Ltd of Cumilla EPZ and BHK Textiles Ltd of Ishwardi EPZ with declaration of textured yarn and roving machine bobbin.

In the physical examination, a total of 31,625.5 litres of liquor in 1,330 cartons were found in the two consignments.

The importers attempted to dodge a revenue amount of Tk 24.70 crore through the false declaration, said the DC.

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested three people in connection with seizure of the consignments from Narayanganj and Dhaka on Sunday.

Moreover, the customs authorities found 15,204 litres of liquor in 1,430 cartons in the consignment seized on Sunday.

The concerned importer attempted to dodge a revenue amount of Tk 12.45 crore through the false declaration.

One Zafar Alam was the clearing and forwarding (C&F) agent of the three consignments.

“Customs authorities are also investigating the matter and legal actions will be taken against the responsible people,” said DC Saiful Hoque.
