Deputy speaker Md Fazle Rabbi Miah was laid to eternal rest at his family graveyard at Gotia in Saghata upazila under Gaibandha district on Monday afternoon following his third namaz-e-janaza.

The valiant freedom fighter was buried beside his two sons’ graves there after a guard of honour was given by the government.

Earlier, the mortal remains of the veteran politician arrived in Dhaka in the morning.

A flight of Emirates Airlines carrying his body from New York reached Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport around 8:40am.

Fazle Rabbi Miah’s first namaz-e-janaza was held around 11:00am on the National Eidgah premises where numerous politicians, judges of both the divisions of the Supreme Court, lawyers, his colleagues and admirers paid tribute to him.

After the janaza, he was paid respect on behalf of the President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury and Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique also placed wreaths on his coffin.

Bangladesh Awami League leaders, led by General Secretary Obaidul Quader, and Jatiya Party leaders, headed by the party Chairman GM Quader, and Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh also attended his namaz-e-janaza and paid homage to him.

Leaders of other political parties, intellectuals, government officials also placed wreaths on the coffin of the deputy speaker.

Fazle Rabbi’s body was taken to Bonarpara Kazi Azahar Ali High School premises in Saghata Upazila of Gaibandha around 2:15pm by a helicopter of armed forces from Dhaka.

His body was kept on Bharatkhali High School premises in Saghata upazila. Thousands of people paid their last respects to him and attended his second namaz-e-janaza there around 3:00pm.

Then his body was taken to his village home in Gotia where he was buried following his third namaz-e-janaza.

Advocate Fazle Rabbi Miah, a seven times lawmaker from Gaibandha-5 (Saghata-Fulchori), passed away on July 22 at Mt Sinai Hospital in New York at the age of 76.

He is survived by three daughters. His wife Anwara Rabbi passed away in May 2020.
