Govt works to ensure safe fish production, supply: Rezaul

Govt earns Tk 2,921cr from fisheries in FY 2021-22

Fisheries and Livestock Minister SM Rezaul Karim on Sunday said the government is working tirelessly to ensure safe fish production and its supply.

"There was no international standard laboratory in Bangladesh in the past to control the quality of fish. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has set up international standard laboratories in the country. The government is working sincerely to ensure that no one can produce harmful fish in the country," he said.

The minister was talking to the reporters after visiting the three-day 'Central Fish Fair' organized at the ground adjacent to the Bangabandhu International Conference Center (BICC) in the capital on the occasion of the celebration of the National Fisheries Week-2022.

About the government's endeavors for the betterment of the fisheries sector, he further said it is now possible to test fish feed and the fish to be exported and formalin is no longer available in the market due to government's pragmatic action.

The minister said officials of the Department of Fisheries and other departments concerned are alert so that no harmful fish could be sold in the market or any other place instead of safe fish, reports BSS.

The minister said that Father of Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman first released fish fry in Ganabhaban Lake to enrich the fisheries sector of Bangladesh.

In continuation of the step showed by Bangabandhu, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, his worthy daughter, is investing in proper way to enrich the fisheries sector in the country.

He hoped that the country will earn foreign exchange from abroad by exporting fish.

 He urged private entrepreneurs to come forward to further expand the fisheries sector.

"The state will provide all kinds of assistance to those who would come forward to this end," he said.

Earlier, Rezaul and Agriculture Minister Dr Muhammad Abdur Razzaque visited various stalls at the Central Fish Fair.

Lawmakers Tanvir Hasan Choto Monir and Shamima Akhter Khanam, Secretary of Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock Dr Mohammad Yamin Chowdhury, Additional Secretary Shyamal Chandra Karmakar, Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation (BFDC) Chairman Md Hemayet Hussain, Director General of Department of Fisheries Mahbubul Haque, Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI) Director General Yahya Mahmud and senior officials concerned were also present, on the occasion.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina virtually inaugurated the three-day 'Central Fish Fair', arranged by the Department of Fisheries, from her Ganabhaban official residence this morning.

Meanwhile, the government has earned Tk 2,921 crore throgh exporting 88.81 metric tonnes of frozen shrimp and white fish from Khulna district in 2021-2022 fiscal year.

Khulna district has produced more 31,849 metric tonnes of fish against its demand,

Joydev Pal, District Fisheries Officer (DFO), Khulna said this while delivering the welcome speech at the inaugural ceremony of the week long National Fisheries Week-2022 at the conference room of the Deputy Commissioner here on Sunday, reports BSS.

Fish production has increased significantly in the district after taking multidimensional development and extention programme for this sector, he said.

Country’s fisheries sector are supplying 60 percent protein and 11 percent people are involved in the profession, he said adding that the fisheries sector is also supplying 62.58 gram fish to each people against their demand of 60 gram.

Khulna City Mayor Talukder Abdul Khaleqe addressed the function as chief guest while Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Khulna Md Moniruzzaman Talukder chaired it.

Terming shrimp farming and its export is an special component in country’s economy, the chief guest said fish fries are disapperaing in the Sundarbans and it’s adjacent rivers due for netting with poision.

He said developing the fisheries resources, which have immense potential, can significantly strengthen the country’s economic base and make the nation self-reliant.

The country’s income from exporting fish has increased a lot during the last decade, he added.

The fisheries week is held every year to create awareness among the people about the country’s fish resources.

In order to protect the endangered species of fish, the government has been running various reservations in different rivers and water-bodies across the country to ensure that the species can breed.

Earlier, KCC Mayor released fish fries in city’s Shaheed Hadis Park’s pond follwing a colourful rally brought out from the Park and ended at the collectorate building. Fish farmers association, fishermen association, frozen foods association and peoples of all walks of life attended the function.
