Four persons were arrested for allegedly extorting money from bus owners after stealing registration and fitness certificates of their buses.

A team of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police arrested Rakib Mia alias Tufan, 27, Shukkur Ali, 28, Hridoy Hossain, 21, and Mohammad Shamim, 25, from the capital’s Mohammad area on Saturday.

Two mobile sets with two SIMs used for collecting extortion and some registration and fitness certificates and tax tokens of buses were seized from them.

Imam Hossain, additional deputy inspector general of the CID, briefed this to reporters in the CID headquarters on Sunday.

The officer said they stole the certificates and tax tokens of different buses of Mirpur Link Paribahan, Shikor Paribahan, Khazababa Paribahan, Projapoti Paribahan and Rob Rob Paribahan. They started the crimes in 2020.

They and their other cohorts got on the buses as passengers and tactfully stole the papers, he said. After that, they contacted the owners or managers of the buses and demanded Tk 10,000 against each bus’s papers.

They also lowered the amount of extortion and finally took Tk 5,000-7,000 from each bus’s papers.

After getting money, they did not return all the papers they stole, said the CID officer.

Later on, they forced the bus owners to pay an amount of money as extortion monthly, he said.
