The Bangladesh Football Federation General Secretary Abu Nayeem Shohag said that they are facing a tough time to form a U-20 team for the upcoming SAFF U-20 Championship.

Shohag said that the crisis arose after the premier league clubs expressed their unwillingness to release their youngsters in the last phase of the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League.

“We’ve officially talked with the clubs. The point is that it’s not the national team’s assignment, so as per the FIFA rules clubs are not obliged to release their players,” Shohag told reporters on Saturday.

“The clubs have important matches at this phase of the league. We are trying to convince the clubs. The U-20 players are currently doing their activities in Kamlapur. But there are some emerging players playing in BPL clubs.

“Bashundhara Kings and Saif Sporting Club agreed to release their players but Mohammedan requested us not to ask for their players. We still believe that we will go to India with our full strength,” he added.

The SAFF U-20 Championship is scheduled to be held from July 25 to August 5 at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, India.

Five teams including Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Maldives and India will take part in the meet.

Meanwhile, the BFF GS said that they dropped the plan to participate in the U-13 multi-nation football competitions in Algeria due to fund issues.
