Alert! Jamaat honing knives

Media reports have it that, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, the Bangladesh chapter of Pakistani Jamaat-e-Islami – theorised and organised along the fanatic line of the Islamic cleric Syed Abul A’la Maududi – is again raising its head, obviously with the ulterior motive of inflicting damage and destruction to the country’s sovereignty, politico-ideological integrity and stability. It is gathered from the lead story of this daily yesterday that Jamaat is reorganising itself not along the legal way that other registered political parties follow but in a clandestine manner. To avoid being fooled, let us not forget the truth that this anti-liberation force not even for a moment stopped its conspiratorial activities after its registration was cancelled by the Election Commission. Even before that, a significant part of its activities was underground.

The timing of Jamaat’s fresh activism is very significant. They are strengthening their organisational efforts clearly with a view to disrupting the next general election to be held in December next year. It may be remembered that Jamaat, like BNP, is vehemently opposed to the constitutional provision of election under elected government. Jamaat is tightening its belt to foil the coming general election. They are going to wage movement simultaneously with other likeminded parties including Khaleda Zia’s BNP to press home their demand for election under the so-called ‘polls-time neutral administration’.

And as regards their method of movement, the country’s people will not forget what BNP and Jamaat did to halt the January 2014 elections. They resorted to arson attacks on private and public transport and establishments and other violent methods that led to the deaths of a large number of innocent people and some members of the law enforcement agencies. None can guarantee that they will not tread the proven path of anti-state and anti-people activities.

So, it is time to be alert and raise the alarm against around round of sabotage and anarchy to be created by the BNP-Jamaat combine. Intelligence agencies should keep watchful eyes on Jamaat’s open and clandestine activities and law enforcement agencies should be kept combat ready to foil their destructive actions. The countrymen have suffered a lot due to BNP-Jamaat’s violence to halt the 2014 elections. Let not that history repeat again!
