Late penalty saves Sheikh Jamal

A dramatic penalty in the last minute helped Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club to bag a 2-2 draw against Saif Sporting Club in their second leg match of the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League football at the Bir Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman Stadium in Munshiganj on Friday.

Midfielder Sohanur Rahman and Uzbek forward Otabek Valijonov scored one goal each for Sheikh Jamal in the 37th and (90+3rd) minutes of the game while Rwandan defender Emery Bayisenge and Uzbek defender Asror Gafurov netted one each for Saif in the 76th and (90+1st) minutes.

Midfielder Sohanur handed a 1-0 lead to Sheikh Jamal with a header, off a corner from defender Shakil Ahmed before the half.

But Saif got the chance to score the equaliser while they were awarded a penalty in the second half.

Sheikh Jamal’s midfielder Mazharul Islam Sourav mistakenly touched the ball while trying to block a straight corner from Saif’s Jamal Bhuyan.

Rwandan defender Bayisenge converted the spot-kick correctly to equalise the scoreline 1-1.

Sheikh Jamal received another blow in the added time when Uzbek defender Gafurov made it 1-2 for Saif with a left-footed angular shot.

But Sohanur, who handed Sheikh Jamal an early lead, again ruined Saif’s celebration when he earned a penalty with a handball trap just a few seconds before the final whistle.   Uzbek forward Otabek seized the chance and saved Sheikh Jamal converting the spot-kick in the right way 2-2.

After the day’s draw, both teams were sharing the third slot with a total of 33 points each. The ongoing round 19 of BPL went on Eid break amid the day’s match. The rest of the four matches of this round will be held after a recess of 5-day on July 14.
