Reigning champions Bashundhara Kings will only need one victory from their remaining three matches to confirm their third Bangladesh Premier League title after they defeated Chattogram Abahoni Ltd by a solitary margin in their 19th round match at the Shaheed Dhirendranath Stadium in Cumilla on Thursday.

Kings had to fight till the end to secure all three points from the game and they won the contest riding on a second-half goal from Gambian forward Nuha Marong.

After the day’s hard-fought win, the big-budgeted club now has 48 points to their name and they have a 10-point lead over second-placed Dhaka Abahani Ltd, which have 38 points from 18 matches.

If Kings beat Saif Sporting Club in their next match on July 18 in Munshiganj, they will be crowned BPL champions after the 2018-19 and 2021 seasons.

Kings can also celebrate their title three days ago on July 14 if Dhaka Abahani lose to Swadhinata Krira Sangha at the Sylhet District Stadium/neutral venue.

The BPL title will also be important for Kings as it will provide a ticket to directly enter into the group stage of the next AFC Cup as well as the qualifying play-off for the next AFC Champions League.

On Thursday, both teams created several chances and half-chances throughout the match.

The credits should go to both goalkeepers – Kings’ Anisur Rahman Zico and Chattgram Abahoni’s SK Saiful Islam as they denied several close chances by the opponents.

After a barren first-half, Nuha scored the lone goal of the match with a right-footed grounder shot off a through pass by Brazilian forward Miguel Figueira Damasceno in the 52nd minute.

Chattogram Abahoni tried their level best to score an equalizer but they had to finish with another defeat in the league – their fourth on the trot and they remained seventh in the points table with 26 points.

Meanwhile, Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club will take on Saif SC at the Bir Shrestha Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman Stadium in Munshiganj today.

The remaining four matches of round 19 will be held after a five-day Eid-ul-Adha vacation on July 14.
