Businessman ‘sets himself ablaze’ at JPC

A businessman allegedly attempted to commit suicide by setting himself on fire at the Jatiya Press Club in the capital on Monday for not getting back money he lent to a company.

With burn injuries to several parts of the body, journalists and others rescued Gazi Anis, also former president of Kushtia district unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), and took him to Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, said Bachchu Mia, in-charge of Dhaka Medical College Hospital police outpost.

Mohammad Ali, a friend of Anis, told reporters at the hospital that Anis owed Tk 1.26 crore to Henolux Company Limited, which had not been paying the amount back for long.

Contacted, Sazzadur Rahman, deputy commissioner (Ramna Division) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, told the Daily Sun that they heard that Anis was the former president of Kushtia district BCL, but could not verify the information instantly.

A private company borrowed Tk 1.26 crore from him and it had not been paying him the money back, he said.

Anis came to the press club to hold a press briefing against the company aiming to get back his money, the police officer said, adding that he suddenly set himself on fire. “We’re looking into the matter,” he said.

Officer- in-charge of Shahbagh Police Station Moudut Hawlader said, “Around two months ago, Anis formed a human chain claiming that a mircocredit company owed to him around Tk 1.26 crore. On Monday afternoon, he suddenly set himself on fire at the badminton playground of the press club.”
