Six killed in road crashes

At least six people were killed in separate road accidents in Dhaka and Shariatpur on Friday and Saturday.

The bodies were sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) and Shariatpur Sadar Hospital for autopsies.

A passer-by named Jahangir Matubbar, 35, was killed as a passenger bus hit him in Paltan area of the capital on Saturday morning.

Mohsin Habib Mridha, sub-inspector of Paltan police station, said the bus hit him when he was crossing the road, leaving him seriously injured.    He was rushed to DMCH where doctors declared him dead around 9:45am.

Early on Saturday, another man was killed as a truck hit him in front of Underground Market at Gulistan under the same police station area.

Quoting locals, police said that Sabbir and Shakil, two children, rescued the victim from the spot and took him to the hospital where he was pronounced dead 2:30am.

The identity of the victim could not be known immediately.

Officer-in-Charge of Paltan Model Police Station said they were trying to arrest the bus and truck drivers.

A youth named Habibur Rahman Khokon, 30, was killed in a road accident at Agargaon on Friday night.

Police said Khokon was injured when a motorcycle hit him. Commuters rescued him and rushed to National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital from where he was shifted to DMCH where he succumbed to his injuries around 10:00pm.

Khokon hailing from Atoa Hazipara under Uzirpur upazila in Barishal lived with his family at a room at Shahid’s Tek Slum in Agargaon.  In Jatarabari, a youth, Siddque Ali, 34, was run over by a truck at Matuail on Friday.

After being hit by the truck, he was injured seriously and he was taken to DMCH where he breathed his last.

An auto-rickshaw slammed Amena Begum, 80, at Nandipara in Khilgaon on Friday, leaving her injured.

She was rushed to Mugda General Hospital where she died.

In Shariatpur, a microbus turned turtle after being hit by a bus on Dhaka-Mawa-Bhanga Expressway at Naodoba in Zajira around 2:45pm on Saturday, leaving one killed and 15 injured.

The deceased was identified as Abdul Haque Molla, 60, of Chagaia village at Aganagar under Bhairab upazila in Kishoreganj.

Passengers of the microbus said some 80 people of Bhairab by seven microbuses came to see Padma Bridge.

They first went to Bhanga from Kishoreganj and returned to their district.

A bus from Patuakhali hit a microbus, they said. Sujon Haque, inspector (investigation) of Padma Bridge South Police Station, confirmed it.
