Five killed as covered van ploughs into pedestrians

At least five people were killed and four others injured when a covered van ploughed into pedestrians on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway in Raipura Upazila of Narsingdi district on Thursday morning.

The deceased were identified as Farooq Miah (55), son of Fayez Ali of Mirzapur Union in the Upazila; Mustakim Miah (40), son of Abu Tayyab Miah of Nilkuthi area; Ripon Miah (28), son of Sentu Miah of Mamudabad area; Bachchu Miah (56), son of Janab Ali; and Shajahan Mia (50) of the same area.

According to police, the driver of the Sylhet-bound van lost control of the steering and crashed into a roadside market.

"A few people were buying groceries there during that time. Two of them were killed on the spot," said Bhairab Highway Police chief Mozammel Hossain.

                Three others succumbed to their injuries on their way to hospitals in Bhairab Upazila of Kishoreganj district and Dhaka.

"The covered van has been seized and kept in our custody.  Legal action is being taken in this regard," he added.
