Swechchhasebak League president Nirmal dies

Awami Swechchhasebak League president Nirmal Ranjan Guha died on Wednesday at the age of 58.

He breathed his last at 10:30am (Bangladesh time) while undergoing treatment at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore, said a press release.

Nirmal Ranjan Guha left behind his wife, two sons and a host of relatives, friends and well-wishers to mourn his death.

Nirmal was admitted to Bangladesh Specialised Hospital in the capital on June 12 after he fell seriously sick. Later, he was flown to Singapore on June 16 for better treatment.

Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death Awami Swechchhasebak League president.

In a condolence message, she said, “Nirmal Ranjan Guha was a tested worker of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and a dedicated person for the party.”

She prayed for salvation of the departed soul and conveyed profound sympathy to the bereaved family.

Besides, AL advisory council member Amir Hossain Amu, AL presidium member Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, AL general secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun, Textiles and Jute Minister Golam Dastagir Gazi, Science and Technology Minister Yaafesh Osman, Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud, Social Welfare Minister Nuruzzaman Ahmed, Law Minister​​ Law Minister Anisul Huq, Fisheries and Livestock Minister SM Rezaul Karim, State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, State Minister KM Khalid, State Minister for Religion Faridul Haque Khan, and AL joint general secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, among others, condoled the death of Nirmal.

The body of Nirmal will be brought back to the country at 6:00pm on Thursday and his body will be taken to the Central Shaheed Minar to pave ways for people from all walks of lives to pay their last respects and central party office on Bangabandhu Avenue in the capital. Later, the body will be taken to Dohar in Manikganj for last ritual,” office secretary of Awami Swechchhasebak League Azizul Haque Aziz told Daily Sun.

On November 25, 2019, Nirmal was elected president of Awami Swechchhasebak League.

In his political career, Nirmal was elected general secretary of Noyabari union unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL). Later, he became general secretary of Manikganj Debendra College and Manikganj District BCL respectively. He was also elected a member and vice president of BCL central committee.

He was also founding convener of Dhaka district unit of Awami Swechchhasebak League. Later, he discharged his duties as central leader of Awami Swechchhasebak League for several times.
