4 of a family burnt in gas explosion

Four members of a family were hurt in a suspected gas explosion in old part of Dhaka in the early hours of Saturday.

Khaleda Yasmin, an officer of FSCD control room, said a gas leak is initially thought to be the reason for the explosion. Three units of firefighters rushed to the spot to deal with the emergency.

Shahjahan Shikder, who is in charge of Media Cell at the Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD) Headquarters, said that the blast happened in a vacant spot in between two buildings on Agasadek Road around 4:30 am. Three walls of the two structures collapsed, he said.

The injured are Mohammad Israfil, 62, his wife Salma Begum, 50, their son Mohammad Imran, 30, and daughter Shahjadi, 24.

Of the injured, Salma received 49 percent burns, Israfil 37 percent burns, Shahjadi 38 percent burns and Imran 20 percent burns.

They are now undergoing treatment in Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.

Bachchu Mia, who is in charge of Dhaka Medical College Hospital Police Outpost, said two of the four are in a critical condition.
