Research gets low priority yet again

The Dhaka University (DU) authorities on Thursday announced the annual budget of Tk 922.48 crore for the fiscal year 2022-23, keeping Tk 15.5 crore or 1.63 percent for research.

DU Treasurer Prof Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed presented the proposed budget at the annual Senate session of the university at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban with Vice-chancellor Prof Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman in the chair.

This year, the size of the budget increased by Tk 90.69cr than the previous year's Tk 831.79cr.

According to the new budget, 29.59pc of the total budget is allocated for salary, 23.74 pc for allowances, 19.51pc for goods and services, 19.51pc for pension and retirement facilities, 2.38pc for capital grant and 3.64pc for other grants.

However, Tk 15.5cr, which is only 1.63pc of the total budget, is allocated for education and research purposes.

In the previous fiscal year, the allocation in research was Tk 11.00cr or 1.32pc.     As per the proposed budget, University Grants Commission (UGC) will provide Tk 781.94cr while Tk 83cr will come from the university's internal sources.

As a result, there will be a deficit of Tk 57.54cr in this fiscal year. Earlier on June 12, the university's syndicate approved the budget at a syndicate meeting held at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban.
