BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday said their decision to boycott the Cumilla City Corporation election under the current regime has been proved right.

“You have observed the Cumilla city polls. I don’t want to talk about it further as we knew earlier that this would happen there. That’s why we clearly said we would not fight any election under this government,” he said.

The BNP leader made the statement while speaking at a discussion arranged by a faction of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) and Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) at Jatiya Press Club in the capital on Thursday.

“Running for any election under this government means giving more legitimacy to it. It’s now a proven fact,” he added. The BNP secretary general said the Awami League has destroyed the democracy and restricted the freedom of expression.

“There is no chance to separate the freedom of press from the freedom of state. That’s why, our main target is to restore democracy,” he said.

Emphasising the need for a mass movement to oust the government, Mirza Fakhrul said the movement that has started by awakening people of all walks of life must be turned into a mass uprising soon.
