Two more succumb to injuries

CHATTOGRAM: Two more people, who suffered severe burn injuries in the devastating fire at BM Container Depot in Sitakunda of the district, died in hospitals on Sunday, taking the death toll in the tragic incident to 48.

The two deceased were identified as firefighter Gausul Azam, 23, and Nurul Qader, 22.

Gausul Azam was undergoing treatment in Sheikh Hasina National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute in Dhaka while Nurul in Park View Hospital in Chattogram.

Ten firefighters were among the total deceased. Three more firemen were still missing.

“Nurul succumbed to his injuries at the ICU of Park View Hospital around 2:00pm,” said Rezaul Karim, managing director of the private hospital.

The body of Nurul of Banshkhali upazila in Chattogram was handed over to his family, he said.

The fire triggered by sporadic explosions from chemical containers ripped through the depot on the night of June 4. The massive explosions rocked four square kilometres area.

Workers of the depot informed that black smoke started billowing initially from a container. The depot staff and workers tried to douse the fire.

They called in firefighters after they failed to bring the fire under control.

At one stage of the operation by several hundred workers, staff and firefighters, an explosion took place with a big bang from a container.

The blaze spread fast engulfing the adjoining containers containing hydrogen peroxide kept for export.

Later, sporadic explosions occurred at several containers, resulting in the massive casualties.
