Traffic thru Padma Bridge from Jun 26, says Quader

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Wednesday said that traffic movement will be allowed on the much-heralded Padma Bridge from June 26.

Besides, ordinary people might be given an opportunity to set foot on the bridge for some time on June 24 before its inauguration the following day, he said.

Quader, also the Awami League General Secretary, said this while exchanging views with public representatives of southern region at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre ahead of the inauguration of the Padma Bridge. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is scheduled to open the long-cherished Padma Bridge at 10:00 am on June 25.

Quader urged all to be alert to conspiracies, as many are hatching plots ahead of the inauguration and are desperately trying to commit acts of sabotage even on the opening day.

“We all must remain vigilant. Everyone must maintain discipline on that day,” he said.

About the withdrawal of World Bank fund from the Padma Bridge project, Quader said construction of the Padma Bridge is an act of revenge for insulting the Bengali nation.

Earlier in the meeting, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in a message instructed AL leaders and activists to be on alert on the day of inauguration. AL Organising Secretary Mirza Azam read out the premier’s message.

AL Presidium Members Kazi Zafarullah, Shahjahan Khan, Jahangir Kabir Nanak, and Abdur Rahman, central leaders Abul Hasnat Abdullah, AFM Bahauddin Nasim, BM Mozammel Haque, Mirza Azam, Mrinal Kanti Das, Abdus Sobhan Golap, Asim Kumar Ukil and Biplab Barua, among others, joined the meeting.
