3-yr plan taken to boost edible oil production
Agriculture Minister Dr Muhammad Abdur Razzaque exchanges views with reporters on action plan to reduce import dependency on edible oil at the conference room of the agriculture ministry at the secretariat on Tuesday.

Agriculture Minister Dr Muhammad Abdur Razzaque said the government has adopted a roadmap to produce 10 lakh tonnes of edible oil locally by next three years which could meet 40 percent of Bangladesh's total demand.

The government has taken a three-year plan to increase local edible oil production to 10 lakh tonnes by FY 2024-25 without reducing the rice production, he said.

The agriculture minister made the remarks while exchanging views with reporters at a meeting on an action plan to reduce import dependency on edible oil at the conference room of the ministry at the Secretariat in Dhaka on Tuesday.

An official at the ministry, however, said the mustard oil got the utmost priority in the draft roadmap as 98 per cent of the locally produced cooking oil is projected to be the mustard oil within the three-year timeframe.

Acreage of mustard, ground nut, sunflower, sesame, soya seed, and other oil seeds will be increased to 23,60,000 hectares of land, according to the plan.

Production of oilseed crops will be increased to 29 lakh tonnes from 12 lakh tonnes now and edible oil production will be increased to 10 lakh tonnes from 3 lakh tonnes.
