Several hundred workers of some readymade garment (RMG) factories staged a demonstration by blocking a road in the capital’s Mirpur area on Saturday demanding an increase in salary.

Some of the workers vandalised a vehicle of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and torched two motorcycles of police in front of Shaheed Suhrawardi Indoor Stadium around 5:30 pm.

Mohammad Mahbub, additional deputy commissioner (Mirpur Zone) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said that no BGB men were present in the vehicle while it was being vandalised.

He said that the workers began demonstrating in the morning; many more workers joined them later.

In the afternoon, they left the road. When they were leaving, some of them vandalised the vehicle of BGB and torched two motorcycles of police, he said. Some workers were detained and taken to the police station.

Agitating worker Salma Khatun said they requested their higher authorities to increase their salaries as the house rent, prices of essentials and other things have risen.
