Sumon Sikdar Musa, a key suspect for the murder of Motijheel Awami League leader Jahidul Islam Tipu and college student Samia Afnan Prity, has been arrested in Oman.
Bangladesh police sought Interpol's help in arresting Musa who fled abroad shortly after committing the crime.
“Musa has been arrested in Oman. We are contacting Oman authorities to bring him back. We are also planning to send a police team. We hope to get a positive result soon,” Islam said.
On the night of March 24, Zahidul Islam alias Tipu was shot dead near the Amtala Mosque in Shahjahanpur.
College student Samia Afrin Prity, who was sitting in a rickshaw during a traffic jam, was also shot dead.
Local woman ward councillor Farhana Islam Dolly, wife of slain Jahidul Islam Tipu, filed a murder case with Shahjahanpur Police Station on March 25.
On the night of March 26, DB arrested a man named Masum Mohammad alias Akash from Bogura, who had fired a shot at Tipu.
Musa served as a conduit between the criminal underworld and the political circle. He also served as a liaison between Dhaka's underworld and Dubai's. On March 12, only two weeks before Tipu's murder, he flew out of Dhaka for Dubai. The assassination of the Awami League's leader was planned in Dubai.
According to the media reports, Musa went to Oman from Dubai last month.
AKM Hafiz Akter,additional commissioner of the Directive Branch of police, who is in charge of an investigation into the murder of Tipu and Prity, also said the process of repatriating Musa has begun.
"It'll be a major success for us if we can bring back Musa through the efforts of the Police Headquarters."
