Miscreants severed one of the hands of a college teacher in Sadar upazila of Kushtia on Tuesday afternoon.

The victim is Tofazzal Hossain, 52, an assistant professor of Economics department at Bashgram Alauddin Ahmed College in Kumarkhali upazila.

He is now undergoing treatment at Kushtia General Hospital. Swarnali Islam, a doctor of the hospital, described the teacher’s condition as very critical.

Police and locals said Tofazzal was going to the district town from the college.

On the way, some miscreants swooped on him at Bongshitala around 3:00pm and beat him.

To save his life, the college teacher started running. However, when he reached a bridge, 10-12 other miscreants, who were already waiting there, pounced on him.

They hacked him with sharp weapons and cut off his right hand from the wrist, the locals said, adding that the criminals later went away.

Victim’s younger brother Monirul Islam said they were in dark about who carried out the attack.

Officer-in-charge of Kushtia Model Police Station Sabbirul Alam said they were trying to arrest the attackers.
