Koyra waterlogging ends as WDB dam repaired

KHULNA: Thousands of Amphan and Yaas-affected people of Koyra upazila under Khulna and Assasuni upazila under Satkhira district have got rid of waterlogging on their cropland and home as the 10.53 km have been successfully repaired.

The breach in Water Development Board (WDB) dam in Koyra site, Gabbunia under Polder13-14/2 and Kurikaunia, Chakla, Lebubunia under Polder 7/1  have been repaired after it was damaged around 2 (two) years back due to cyclone Amphan on May 20, 2020. Thousands of local people worked united to rebuild the most vulnerable part of the dams. The affected 1 lake people have become extremely happy and euphoric as they can get back their home and land.

Commander of 105 Infantry Brigade, Brigadier General Molla Md Kamruzzaman on behalf of 55 Infantry Division and Area Commander, Jashore handed over the complete papers to Chief Engineer of WDB, South-Western Area AKM Tahmidul Islam at a programme held at Koyra Upazila Dakbangalow premises on Monday.

The approximate cost of embankment work in polder 13-14/2 under Koyra and polder 7/1 under Assasuni upazila is Tk. 142 crore. Project Director and Commander of 3 Engineering Battalion Lt Colonel Gazi Masud Md Mahenur led the repair work, supervised and monitored the construction of embankment and breach closures.

Many areas were devastated and people become homeless due to these catastrophes. Referring that cyclonic storm Sidr on Nov 15, 2007, Aila on May 25, 2009, Amphan on May 20, 2020 and Yaas on May 26, 2021 battered south-western districts Khulna, Bagerhat, Satkhira.

Bangladesh Army was deployed on May 31, 2020 at Koyra and Assasuni upazilas in adder to monitor and supervise the construction and repair work of embankment and breach closures of Water Development Board (WDB) in these areas. Army personnel with the help local administration have remained present and vigilant from dawn to dusk in the working site with a view to constructing embankment and breach closures successfully. By doing that closure’s at Gabbunia, Koyra, Kurikaunia, Chakla, Labubia have been successfully completed by April 30, 2022.

Among others, Koyra Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Animesh Biswas, Upazila Parishad Chairman SM Shafiqul Islam, Army Officials, police, BGB, RAB, Fire Service, local civil officials and journalists were present on the occasion
