19 tonnes of sodium cyclamate seized in Ctg

CHATTOGRAM: Customs officials seized 19 tonnes of contraband sodium cyclamate brought under the false declaration of soda ash in the port city on Thursday.

Sources said importer DSS Enterprise of Bongshal area in the capital declared to import soda ash light from China in a container.

A vessel named "HR Hera" reached the Chattogram Port on May 18 with the container.

As the importer didn’t take any steps to take delivery of the goods, the Customs Audit, Investigation and Research (AIR) wing conducted a physical examination of the container.

An inner plastic sack was noticed in every sack carrying a sticker of soda ash during the examination. They later found 19 tonnes of sodium cyclamate and one metric tonne of soda ash light in the sacks, said the Customs Deputy Commissioner (DC) Salauddin Rizvi.

The contraband sodium cyclamate, which is 50 times sweeter than normal sugar, causes cancer, he said.

The DC said steps were taken to identify the people behind the attempt and ensure exemplary punishment for them.
