The country’s dignity has increased across the world after its elevation to a developing nation, Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal remarked on Wednesday.

“We’ve graduated from a lower tier to an upper tier and our dignity has risen across the globe compared to that earlier. We’re now a developing nation and waiting for becoming a higher middle-income country by 2031 and a developed nation by 2041,” he said on Wednesday.

He was speaking as the chief guest at an event of Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) held at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC)to train up officials on upcoming Population Census and Household Survey 2022.

“It is our commitment that Bangladesh will be free of hunger and poverty by 2030. If we can do so, we’ll be able hit the core theme of Bangabandhu’s unfinished biography,” he commented.

He continued that Bangabandhu’s main dream was economic geographical and economic emancipation of people.

“Even though he was able to give us geographical freedom, he could not ensure the economic emancipation. We did not give him that opportunity. The Prime Minister is accomplishing his unfinished job,” he noted.

Kamal said he was pleased that the population census is going to be conducted digitally with home-grown technology.

“Is statistics or data are not right, we can’t perform rightly in economic issues. If the data is not right, all perception and planning will go in vain,” he pointed out.

He also observed that a good number of country people died earlier because of poorly counducting population census.

He called upon the countrymen to generously provide information in the week-long population census to be carried out across the country from June 15-21.

Turning down fear of providing accurate data will hike taxes on people, he urged all to provide exact information so that the key objective of the census do not get hampered.

In a video message, Planning Minister MA Mannan acknowledged the necessity of the population census for overall development of the country.

He informed that the census is going to be held after one and a half years because of Covid-19 pandemic.

He hoped that the census will be held in a very short time and utmost ease as necessary manpower has already been engaged at the field level to monitor the project activity.

BBS Director General Md Tajul Islam chaired the event also attended by Statistics and Informatics Division Secretary Dr Shahnaj Arefin, ICT Division Senior Secretary NM Ziaul Alam and Cabinet Division Additional Secretary Shamsul Arefin, among others.
