BNP misinterprets PM’s comment on Padma Bridge

Says Quader

Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader on Friday said that Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is trying to create confusion among the people by misinterpreting the words of the Prime Minister’s statement.

“Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and other BNP leaders know it very well that what her (Sheikh Hasina) intension was? If she (Sheikh Hasina) had wished her (Khaleda Zia) death, she would not have allowed the convict at home for better treatment even after revoking her bail by the High Court,” he said in a statement.

The AL spokesperson came up with the remark as the BNP secretary general Fakhrul claimed pushing Khaleda Zia into the river from the Padma Bridge is tantamount to a direct ‘death threat’.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina opined that Khaleda Zia once said that the Padma Bridge would collapse while in use it as it was being constructed with patchworks. They (Khaleda and others) should be taken to the Padma Bridge and pushed into the river from there she said.

Recalling the August 21 grenade attack Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, said, “Mirza Fakhrul is talking about etiquette. Where was your so-called etiquette during the heinous assassination attempts, including the grisly grenade attack on August 21 aiming at killing Bangabandhu daughter Sheikh Hasina?”

Mentioning that Padma Bridge is a milestone of changed Bangladesh, the minister blamed the BNP for blocking World Bank funding on the Padma Bridge.

“The BNP and its allies have been constantly conspiring to stop the Padma Bridge work and blocked foreign funding relating to it,” he said.

“Sheikh Hasina expressed her firmness to build the Padma Bridge with own fund. At that time, remarks of a vested group including Khaleda Zia were irrational and mischievous. These conspiracies and political propaganda were not only anti-government but also treasonous,” he added.

Alleging that Ziaur Rahman had started politics of coup after killing Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Quader said in its continuation, Sheikh Hasina and Awami League came under attacks repeatedly.
