Bashundhara Kings goalkeeping coach Nuruzzaman Nayan said on Monday that their prime target in the AFC Cup 2022 would be to concede fewer goals in three games.

He added that the tournament would be more challenging than last year as they are focusing more on the defence.

“All of our opponents are balanced and well-prepared. I think they are more stronger than our BPL (premier league) opponents. Besides, we also came here with a balanced and well-prepared team and our only aim is to qualify in the next stage,” Nuruzzaman said.

The Bangladeshi champions beat Maldivian side TC Sports by 5-1 goals in their maiden match in AFC Cup 2020, however, the competition was later abandoned due to Covid.

Meanwhile, the Kings defeated Maziya SRC by 2-0 while playing a goalless draw with Indian team Bengaluru FC and a 1-1 draw with another Indian side ATK Mohun Bagan in 2021.

The Bangladeshi giants remained unbeaten with two wins and two draws in AFC Cups so far as they scored a total of 8 goals and conceded only two goals in all four matches in the group stage.

“Last year, we remained unbeaten and conceded fewer goals but failed to qualify in the next stage. This year, we will execute some new plans. Also, we are focusing more on the defence and their prime target would be to concede fewer goals,” he said.

Nuruzzaman talked to The Daily Sun over the phone after completing their second day’s training session. The team sweated over for one and half-hour on their training ground near the main venue Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on the day’s afternoon.

Kings will start their campaign in AFC Cup against the Maldivian side Maziya Sports and Recreation Club on Wednesday at 9:00pm (BST).
