At least 20 mobile phone snatching gangs are active in nine areas of the capital during this holy month of Ramadan.

The areas are Motijheel, Mugda, Shahjahanpur, Paltan, Khilgaon, Sabujbagh, Rampura, Shahbagh and Ramna.

On Monday, members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-3) apprehended 31 snatchers in Dhaka's Lalbagh, Paltan, Gulistan, Baitul Mokarram, Motijheel, Khilgaon, Hatirjheel and Wari, and Siddhirganj in Narayanganj.

RAB-3 Commanding Officer (CO) Lt Col Arif Mohiuddin Ahmed said this while briefing reporters at their media centre in the capital on Tuesday.

They also seized 717 smartphones, 793 button phones, 30 tabs, 28 laptops, and Tk 55,647 from their possession.

Usually, the muggers sell the snatched goods at makeshift shops in front of different shopping malls in the capital.

Rakib was the ringleader of the gang in Gulistan area, Billal in Paltan area, Parves in Ramna area, Nasir Uddin in Shahbagh area, and Yusuf Bepari in Motijheel area.

During primary interrogation, they said they changed the IME numbers of the mugged sets and sold them to customers.
