DPL title to be decided today?

The title of the ongoing Bangabandhu Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League 2021-22 can be decided today with Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club being the front-runner to clinch the championship.

League-leaders Sheikh Jamal will face Prime Bank Cricket Club in the third round super league match at the BKSP-4 venue and a win in the game will all but confirm Sheikh Jamal’s maiden DPL title.

Sheikh Jamal had a dream run in the ongoing tournament as they were only beaten once in 12 matches and currently have a four-point lead over second-placed Legends of Rupganj – the only other title contender remaining in the tournament.

However, Rupganj must win their next match, which is scheduled to take place today in Mirpur, against Abahani Limited in order to take the title contest to the wire.

A Rupganj defeat as well as a Sheikh Jamal win today will be enough to get new DPL champions this year and Sheikh Jamal head coach Sohel Islam claimed that they’re thing nothing but a victory in today’s contest.

“The inclusion of Mushfiqur has bolstered our team strength. We have a different plan for tomorrow’s game. But we’re not thinking of anything but a win,” Sohel told The Daily Sun on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Sheikh Jamal’s opposition for today’s game - Prime Bank - have already been ruled out of the title contenders’ list after losing four out of their last five games.

However, Prime Bank head coach Mohammad Salahuddin feels that his side still has a lot to prove in the remaining three matches of the league.

“We’re not in the title race but we still have many things to prove in the league,” said Salahuddin.

Meanwhile, in the day’s other super league match, Gazi Group Cricketers will take on Rupganj Tigers Cricket Club at the BKSP-3 venue.

Gazi Group are currently placed fifth in the six-team super league table with 12 points while newly-promoted Rupganj Tigers are in sixth place with 10 points from 12 games.

Meanwhile, in the last relegation league match, Brothers Union will play against City Club at the Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium in Fatullah on the same day.

Both the teams have already avoided relegation to the lower tier and so the match will only be a regulatory one. Khelaghar Samaj Kallayan Samity have been demoted to the lower tier from the relegation league stage.
