13,000 diarrhoea patients hospitalised in 10 days

The number of daily diarrhoea patients in Dhaka and its adjacent areas is still increasing as nearly 13,000 patients were admitted to icddr,b hospital in the last 10 days.

According to the icddr,b data, 843 diarrhoea patients were taken to the hospital from 12:00 am to 5:00 pm on Sunday. Around 60 patients are rushing to the hospital every hour.

Some 1,296 diarrhoea patients were admitted to the icddr,b hospital on April 9, 1375 on April 8, 1,382 on April 7, 1,370 on April 6, 1,379 on April 5, 1,383 on April 4.

Earlier, 1,171 patients were admitted to the hospital on April 3, 1,274 on April 2, and 1,274 on April 1.

In Dhaka, diarrhoea patients from different areas of the capital and its adjacent districts like Narayanganj, Gazipur, Munshiganj, and Narsingdi are rushing to the hospital.

The icddr,b authorities have already pitched two additional tents as they are struggling to accommodate the increasing number of diarrhoea patients.

"There has been a huge pressure of diarrhoea patients at the icddr since March 7," icddr's Baharul Alam said.

Sources said the diarrhoea disease has spread to a number of areas in the capital as more than 10 areas, including Jatrabari, Gendaria, Tejgaon, Mohammadpur, Mirpur, Vatara, Kadamtali, Dakkhinkhan, have been identified as diarrhoea hot spots in Dhaka city.

Sources at the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said the overall diarrhoea situation has deteriorated in the country with the waterborne disease spreading in many districts.

Hospitals in other districts, including Faridpur, Chandpur, Bhola, and Meherpur, are receiving an increasing number of diarrhoea patients as doctors and nurses are struggling to tackle the situation.
