Show-cause notice served on Shawkat Mahmud again

The BNP has served a show cause notice to its vice-chairman and journalist leader Shawkat Mahmud again asking for an explanation as to why he held a rally without the permission of the party.

A letter signed by the party's Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi was sent to Shawkat Mahmud on Wednesday. He has been asked to respond to the notice within five days.

On March 27, a rally was held in front of the Jatiya Press Club under the banner of "Professional Society" demanding that the government rein in prices of essential commodities, restore democracy and release party Chairperson Khaleda Zia.

Some leaders and activists of the BNP and its front and associate organisations joined the event under the leadership of Shawkat Mahmud.

A meeting of BNP's standing committee held on Monday decided to take organisational action against Shawkat Mahmud for arranging such a programme without party's permission.

Shawkat Mahmud may be expelled by the party’s policymaking body if he fails to come up with a satisfactory explanation, said a central BNP leader requesting anonymity.

Earlier in December last year, the party issued a show-cause notice to Shawkat Mahmud for violating the party discipline by staging a sudden demonstration in the city.
