Two minor girls were slaughtered brutally by ‘their maternal uncle’ in his house at Kazirbalsa village in Ishwarganj upazila of Mymensingh on Monday.
The deceased were identified as Saima Akhter, 5, daughter of Salma Akter, and Tripti Akhter, 4, daughter of Halima Khatun of Nandail upazila in the district.
Locals said Salma and Halima came to their father late Abdus Salam’s house at the village some 10 days ago.
On Monday afternoon, Mahabub called his nieces Saima and Tripti and took them to a room when his sisters Salma and Halima are cooking in the kitchen.
As other family members were busy with various activities, Mahabub cut their throat and rushed to a nearby mosque to offer prayers.
Salma and Halima found their daughters throat-slit. Hearing screams, local people rushed and detained Mahabub from the mosque.
On information, police rushed to the spot, recovered the bodies and took them to the police station.
The reason behind the killings could not be known immediately, but neighbours said Mahabub, the fourth child of seven siblings of late Abdus Salam, was ‘mentally sick’.
Sadekur Rahman, younger brother of Mahabub, said that after passing Dakhil exam, Mahabub was admitted to a Qawmi Madrasa in Nandail. But, he was sent home from the madrasa for behaving like a madman.
After that he was treated several times by doctors and Kabiraji but to no avail. He has been at home since then.
Officer-in-Charge of Ishwarganj Police Station Abdul Qadir Mia said the killer, Mahbub, has been arrested. A case was being filed in this connection.
