11kg gold seized at HSIA

Members of the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) arrested two men and seized 96 gold bars weighing 11 kgs fthe rom cargo village of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital on Sunday.

 The arrestees are Firoz Alam, 25 and Mohammad Niatullah, 40.

Dr Md Abdur Rouf, Director General of CIID, told reporters at a press briefing at the Airfreight Unit of the CIID (Uttara).

He said, “We had information that some gold bars have been brought in the fabric carton. Accordingly, a team of customs intelligence took a position at the Cargo Village.”

“The officers of Airfreight Circle of CIID intercepted a consignment while unloading through the delivery gate of the courier unit at the airport,” he added.

The gold bars were found packed under the folds of imported fabrics. There were 96 gold bars that weighed 11.13 kgs, he said.     

The gold bars were smuggled into the country illegally evading customs duties, he added.

A departmental case and a criminal case are being filed against the arrestees.
