Selina Hayat Ivy was  sworn in as mayor of the Narayanganj City Corpo-ration (NCC) on Wednesday for the third consecutive term.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina virtually administered the oath to Ivy at Osmani Memorial Auditorium from her official residence Ganabhaban in the capital.

All the 36 elected councilors of the city corporation, including nine of the reserved seats, also took oath on the day.

Local Government, Rural Development (LGRD) and Cooperatives Minister Tazul Islam administered the oath to the 36 councilors in person at the swearing-in ceremony.

The much-talked-about Narayangaj city polls were held on January 16.

Awami League candidate Ivy was elected mayor for the third consecutive term. She defeated her close  rival Taimur Alam Khandakar by a wide margin of 66,535 votes.

Ivy, who contested the polls with ‘Boat’ symbol, secured 159,097 votes while her rival independent candidate Taimur bagged 92,166 votes with ‘Elephant’ symbol.

A medical practitioner by profession, Selina Hayat Ivy joined politics in 2003, riding on the popularity of her late father Ali Ahmed Chunka.

Chunka was the first chairman of the Narayanganj municipality.

On October 30, 2011, Ivy took part in the first election to the local body against Shamim Osman after Narayanganj municipality had been upgraded to a city corporation.
