Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam on Monday said they have identified 42 spots which were once parts of canals in the DNCC area, but now being used illegally.

“We’ve identified the spots during a survey. We’ll launch a programme to recover the spots from illegal grabbers very soon,” he said while addressing a meeting on water-logging at the DNCC Headquarters in Gulshan-2.

There are a total of 29 canals in the DNCC area and most of the canals are under illegal occupation. The Bangladesh Army is working to demarcate the boundary walls of canals.

At the programme, the mayor directed the officials of the waste management department to clean all drainage lines by March 15 as most of the lines are now clogged with solid waste.

“We’ll clean all the drainage lines by 15 March using modern equipment. The officers and the workers involved in the activities will have to be sincere in this regard."

He also said that DNCC would form 10 rapid action teams to find a solution to perennial water-logging problems.

“DNCC is working on a short-, mid- and long-term basis to get rid of the water-logging problems and to curb various forms of pollutions,” added Atiqul.
