A terrible fire broke out at a readymade garment (RMG) factory in Madanpur area of Narayanganj on Friday.

When contacted, Rozina Akter, duty officer of Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD), said the fire broke out on the first and second floor of three two-storey buildings.

Zaheen Knitwears Limited is the name of the factory. The fire broke out at around 4:30pm.

On information, 10 firefighting units from nearby fire stations rushed to the spot to douse the blaze. Three more units joined the team as the blaze remained still out of control, she said.

M Jamaluddin, owner of Zaheen Knitwears Limited, said the factory was closed on Friday. The fire broke out around 4:00pm. Gradually the severity of the fire increased. The fire broke out in three buildings including garment godown, swing department and office room. However, he could not immediately say what caused the fire.

It is initially being assumed that the fire started from a short circuit and spread quickly due to the stockpile of fabrics.

However, the chances of casualties are low as it was a holiday in the factory, the fire service official added.

The blaze is still out of control while filing the report at 7:15pm.

Zaheen Knitwears Limited is located on the opposite of Olympic Biscuit Factory on Sonargaon Road in Narayanganj.
