11 killed in accidents

At least eleven people were killed and many others injured in three separate accidents in Nilphamari, Bogura, and Barisal districts on Wednesday.

In Nilphamari, four female workers were killed and four others injured when a running train hit their battery-run auto-rickshaw at a railway crossing in Nilphamari's Sadar upazila on Wednesday morning.

The deceased were identified as Sayera Banu, 33, Shefali Akter, 28, Ruma Akter, 35, and Minara Akter, 22, residents of Dhanipara area under Sonarai Union in the upazila. All of them were the workers of Uttara EPZ in the district.

According to witnesses, the tragic incident occurred at around 6:30 am when the train rammed their auto-rickshaw    while crossing Daroyani rail line.

One died on the spot while eight others received severe injuries.

Later, three succumbed to their injuries on way to Nilphamari General Hospital and Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

Sonaray Union Parishad chairman Nurul Islam Shah confirmed the deaths of four people. He said the accident occurred due to thick fog there.

Moreover, the number of accidents is increasing due to unguarded railway crossings, he added.

In Bogura, at least five people were killed when a passenger bus rammed their auto-rickshaw at Ranirhat crossing of Mirzapur on Rangpur-Bogura highway under Sherpur upazila in Bogura district.

Identities of the deceased could not be known immediately but all were passengers of the auto-rickshaw.

The accident happened in Mirzapur area around 5 pm, said AKM Baniul Anam, inspector of Sherpur highway police camp.

Inspector Baniul said a Bogura-bound bus from Dhaka hit the auto-rickshaw from opposite direction in the area.

In another incident, two schoolboys were killed when a passenger bus hit their motorcycle in Barisal's Gournadi upazila.

Another student was injured in the incident. He was admitted to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital.

The accident took place on the Barisal-Dhaka highway near Barthi Bazar in the upazila at 10:30 am on Wednesday.

The deceased were identified as Antar Byapari, 18, son of Malek Byapari of Barthi area and Redwan Fakir, 18, son of Jalal Fakir of Tarakupi area.

They were 10th grade students. Injured Qayyum Gharami (18) is the son of Selim Gharami of nearby Gainer Par area.

 He is a classmate of the deceased.

According to Shant, three people from the school were going to the AB Siddique Diagnostic Center to get vaccinated against coronavirus.

The accident happened on the way. Gournadi Highway Police Sergeant Mahabur Rahman said the Baleshwar Paribahan bus left Patharghata in Barguna for Chattogram in the morning with passengers.

The bus hit their motorcycle on the Barisal-Dhaka highway while crossing the area adjacent to Barthi Bazar.

The motorcycle twisted and all three students were seriously injured.

The locals rescued the injured and admitted them first to Gournadi and later to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College.

Antar died at around 12 noon. The other two were hospitalized. Redwan died on the way to Dhaka in an ambulance at around 4 in critical condition.

Mahabur Rahman said that after the accident, the agitated crowd vandalized the Baleshwar transport and blocked the highway.

Numerous vehicles were stuck on both sides of the road at that time. About an hour later, the protesters lifted the blockade with the intervention of the Gaurnadi Highway Police.
