A female cleaner was crushed under the wheels of a city corporation garbage truck in Mohakhali area in the capital early on Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Shikha Rani Gharani, an outsourced cleaner of DNCC, according to DNCC officials.

Shah Alam, inspector (investigation) of Tejgaon Police Station, quoted witnesses as saying that when Shikha was sweeping streets near Jahangir Gate of the area, the truck mowed her down and drove away through Farmgate at around 2:00 am, leaving her head on the spot.

“Police are yet to identify the truck and its driver. We are trying to work it out by scrutinising the CCTV footage,” he added.

S M Sharif-Ul Islam, DNCC Chief Waste Management Officer, told Daily Sun that Shikha Rani was working as an outsourced cleaner for DNCC.

The body was sent to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital morgue for post-mortem examinations.

Khokon Gharani, son of the deceased, filed a case at Tejgaon Police Station in this connection.  Sunday’s death from the road accident is the fourth since November last year in Dhaka involving city corporation garbage trucks.  On December 23, a man named Swapan Kumar Sarkar, 62, died after a garbage truck of DSCC hit him in Wari area.

On November 24, Nayeem Hasan, a student of Notre Dame College, was knocked down by a DSCC dust cart in front of Gulistan Hall Market.

On November 25, another man named Kabir Khan died as he was knocked over by a DNCC vehicle in Panthapath area.
