‘Pulsiraat’ to be staged at Shilpakala today

Popular theatre troupe Prachyanaut will stage its much-acclaimed production ‘Pulsiraat’ at the Experimental Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) this evening.

The play ‘Pulsiraat’ has been adapted from Palestinian writer Ghassan Khanafani’s famous novel ‘Men in the Sun’. Translated by Masumul Alam and scripted by Monirul Islam, Kazi Toufiqul Islam Emon has directed the play.

The story of the drama revolves around three Palestinian refugees named Abu Kayes, Asad and Marwan, seeking to travel from the refugee camps in Iraq to Kuwait where they hope to find work as labourers in the oil boom. The three men each take a job as clerk at a local store. And they start their journey towards Kuwait with a lorry driver named Abul Khaijuran. They are forced to ride in the back of the truck across the desert on their way to Kuwait.  The men are treated gruffly and are humiliated by the process. At several checkpoints, the men hide in a large, empty, water tank in the stifling mid-day heat as the driver arranges paperwork to get through. Thus, the story of ‘Pulsiraat’ goes forward on.

The probable cast of the play includes Azad Abul Kalam, Shahriar Sajeeb, Monirul Islam Rubel, Saiful Islam Journal, Chetona Rahman and others.
