The government has introduced electronic database project for cottage, micro, small and medium enterprise (CMSME).

This aims to facilitate services to the entrepreneurs in the sector.

Industries Minister Nurul Majid Humayun inaugurated the project as the chief guest at SME Foundation in Dhaka on Thursday.

State Minister for ICT Zunaid Ahmed Palak was also present as special guest.

Industries minister said the CMSME sector constitutes 70 percent of the country’s economy while 85 percent industry employments come from this potential segment.

“The electronic database of CSME will help the authorities form policies based on research and development. And the country will finally benefit from contributions of the SMEs, the lifeline of rural economy,” he hoped.

The minister informed that the SME sector supplies 30 to 35 percent of products to the domestic industry.

The Ministry of Industries has undertaken the project after an application from the SME entrepreneurs. The application was uploaded from the Union Digital Centre in Bhairab in Kishorganj.

State Minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak said the government is working to ease the service for entrepreneurs through digital services in different sectors.

“The digital services open new opportunities for honest entrepreneurs. This also narrows the ways for corrupt businesses,” he said.

“We want to work together with all ministries to improve services to citizens with limited resource. The CMSME database will help the entrepreneurs avail services just on finger tips,” Palak said.

He proposed introducing a support centre for new entrepreneurs to help them in paper works in the government offices.

Around 99 percent of 7.8 million businesses in the country represent CSME sector, according to a national economic census.

SME Foundation chairperson Prof Masudur Rahman presided over the meeting. SME Foundation managing director Mafizur Rahman made the address of welcome while A2i project director Dewan Muhammad Humayun Kabir also spoke on the occasion.

The project began in a couple of areas across the country including Shyampur in Dhaka, Adamdighi in Bogra, Nesarabad in Pirojpur and Bhairab in Kishoreganj on pilot basis.

State-run SME Foundation is executing the database with technical support from Aspire to Innovate (A2i) programme of the ICT Division.

The database is integrated with National Intelligence for Skills, Employment & Entrepreneurship – NISE platform.

SME Foundation MD said the authorities are working to increase contribution of SME to 32 percent in GDP by 2024 following the national policy. The electronic database is expected to help maintain growth in the SME sector.
