Take action against rumormongers on social media: Hasan

The government has directed all the Deputy Commissioners (DC) to take action against those involved in spreading rumors and propagandas on social media.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud told reporters after addressing the first session of the third day of the conference held at Osmani Memorial Auditorium on Thursday.

“Social media is not only a big platform for publicity but also a place for spreading propaganda. The statistics of the last eight years showed that almost all the unexpected incidents took place in the country following rumors on social media,” the minister said.

“Extensive discussions took place in the DC conference. I asked all the DCs to take action against those involved in provoking unrest by spreading rumour on social media,” he said.

DCs have been instructed to shut down unregistered IPTVs and YouTube channels that broadcast news in the country, he added.

A broadcasting policy has been is approved by the cabinet and DCs will take effective measures to implement it, said the minister.

He also praised the DCs for taking commendable initiatives by conducting mobile courts to implement “Clean Feed” programme since October 1 last year.

The DC conference began at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium on Tuesday after a two-year break due to corona situation in the country.

The conference ended on Thursday. In the previous years, DC conferences were held at the meeting room of the Cabinet Division in the Secretariat.
