Mosharraf refutes allegation of BNP hiring lobbyists

BNP standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain denied the allegation of appointing any lobbyist in the United States by their party.

“This government is delivering such statements in bid to misguide people with some baseless and fabricated documents. These (allegations) are totally fabricated. We will let the people know about our stance in this regard elaborately at a press conference,” he said.

The BNP leader came up with the statement while talking to reporters after paying tribute to the party founder Ziaur Rahman at the his grave at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital on Wednesday, on the occasion of Zia’s 86th birth anniversary.

"After the United States imposed sanctions on the high-ranking officials of an organisation and Bangladesh did not get the invitation to join US Democracy Summit, they made baseless and fabricated allegation. We want to ask why such allegation against BNP has never been raised before," he added.

Khandaker Mosharraf alleged that the ruling party has been appointing foreign lobbyists for the past 14 years in order to ‘cover up’ incidents of human rights violation and plundering the people’s wealth.

The BNP leader also called upon the people of the country to unite once again to create an environment in which democracy and the party chairperson Khaleda Zia will be freed.

Other leaders and activists of the party including standing committee members Mirza Abbas, Nazrul Islam Khan, and Gayeshwar Chandra Roy and Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi were present at the programme.

Mirza Abbas said they will not participate in any election under the current Awami League government, without non-party, neutral government.

Earlier on Tuesday, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam alleged that BNP spent at least US$ 3.75 million on lobbyists and shared relevant documents with the media which are also available in the public domain.
