Bangladesh national women’s team got off to a winning start in the ICC Commonwealth Games Qualifier 2022 as they defeated Malaysia by eight wickets at Kinrara Oval in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday.
All-rounder Rumana Ahmed starred with the ball as she claimed 2-4 in her four overs while debutant Suraiya Azmin also picked 2-7 as the Tigresses restricted the hosts to 49-9 in their stipulated 20 overs after the visitors sent them to bat first. Malaysia skipper Winifred Duraisingam and Mas Elysa were the only two batters to reach double-figure as they made 12 and 11 runs respectively.
Opener Shamima Sultana made the highest 28 off 19 balls while another opener Murshida Khatun made 14 runs. Nur Arianna Natsya claimed both the wickets conceding 14 runs off her two overs.
“As a spinner, the turn was less but (the pitch is) good for spinners if they bowl in the right areas with good variation,” said leg-spinner Rumana, who was also adjudged player of the match.
Bangladesh skipper Nigar Sultana Joty acknowledged how her team’s hard work is paying off. “We worked so hard back home for this. We played some practice matches…we all know if we do well here, this is going to help us in the upcoming World Cup as well,” she said.
Bangladesh will face Kenya in their second match of the qualifiers at the same venue today. Meanwhile, favourites Sri Lanka also registered a comfortable 109-run victory over Scotland to start the tournament on a high note in the day’s other match.
