Film actress Raima Islam Shimu, whose body was found wrapped in sack after her “disappearance” from her residence at Kalabagan in the capital on Sunday, has been killed by her husband Shakhawat Alim Nobel over a family feud, police said.

Police got the information while interrogating Nobel on Monday night after Shimu’s body was recovered from a roadside bush at Alipur in Hazratpur of Keraniganj in the morning.

To hide the incident, Nobel staged a drama that Shimu went out of their residence and did not return home.

Police arrested Nobel, 48, and his friend Abdullah Farhad, 47, in their residences in connection with the killing.

The arrestees confessed to their involvement in the Shimu murder. Nobel murdered her while Farhad helped him to hide her body, Police Super Maruf Hossain Sarder told a press briefing on Tuesday.

Shahidul Islam Khokon, a brother of the victim, filed a case against Nobel and Farhad with Keraniganj Model Police Station on Tuesday.    The arrested were produced before a Dhaka court which placed them on three-day remand.

Police sent the body to Sir Salimullah Medical College Midford Hospital for autopsy.

The forensic department of the medical college already conducted his autopsy report.

Dr Sohel Mahmud, chief of Forensic Department of the medical college, told reporters that Shimu was suffocated to death.

“We found injury marks on her throat,” he said, suspecting that Shimu might have been suffocated to death with a rope or such a thing.

They collected samples from her body to conduct viscera and DNA tests to know about the murder properly and two know if she was raped before the murder, the doctor said.

However, SP Maruf told reporters on the premises of his office at Kotwali in the capital that they were informed of a body at Hazratpur on Sunday morning.

On the information, a team of police rushed to the spot and recovered the body stuffed in a sack and sent it to the hospital.

After identifying her, police went to her residence on Green Road in Kalabagan and collected evidence and information to dig out the mystery behind the murder, he said.

Although the accused committed the crime in a preplanned way, they kept some evidence that helped police trace them.

He said they brought Nobel and his friend Farhad to Keraniganj Model Station for interrogation.

During interrogation, they confessed to their involvement in the murder, said the SP.

“Nobel killed her while Farhad helped him hide the body,” he said.

On the reason of the killing, he said that police came to know that she was killed over family feud.

Police suspect that Shimu might have been killed in their Kalabagan residence between 7:00am and 8:00am on January 16. The private car in which the body of the actress was carried was seized, he said.

After their arrest, Nobel and Farhad were kept in police custody.

In response to a question on how she was killed, the police officer did not give the details.

The victim’s two brothers — Harun-Ar-Rashid and actor Shahidul Islam Khokon — and younger sister Fatema Nisah visited the police station around 1:00pm.

Fatema, who filed a GD with Kalabagan Police Station at about 11:00pm on Sunday over the missing of Shimu, told reporters that that they were yet to know who and why killed their sister.

When she was told that their brother-in-law Nobel murdered their sister, she said that she said that if it was true, they would ask him why he committed so destroying their 18 years of conjugal life.

Earlier, Shahidul Islam Khokon accompanied with Dhallywood hero Zayed Khan told journalists that his sister’s husband killed Shimu.

In response to a question why her husband killed her, he said that Nobel was a drug addict and he used to torture her.

Zayed Khan then protested against the murder and demanded capital punishment for the killers.

In 1998, Shimu entered into the showbiz world through acting on film ‘Bartaman’ directed by KaziHayet.

She worked for about 25 cinemas and many dramas. Some 184 members, including Shimu, were suspended from Bangladesh Film Artists Association. She raised voice against the suspension and was active in movements to re-get their membership.

She was not going on a good term with Zayed Khan, general secretary of the association, said sources. A few days ago, she had an argument with Zayed Khan, Shahidul Islam Khokon told reporters.

Denying the allegation, Zayed said he did not meet her for a long time.
