Govt releases 10 new rice varieties

The government has released 10 new rice varieties on Tuesday with an aim to increase food production of the country to meet the food demand of people.

National Seed Board (NSB) approved the release of those rice varieties for cultivating in Boro season at the board’s 106th meeting in the capital, said a press release of the Ministry of Agriculture.

Among the rice varieties, Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) has developed two varieties, Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA) developed one rice variety, Brac developed one inbred rice variety and other organisations developed six rice varieties.

Agriculture Secretary and NSB Chairman Md Sayedul Islam gave the approval.

He said that the yield of hybrids is high for this the Ministry of Agriculture is focusing on innovation and cultivation of hybrid varieties to increase production from less land.

“About 218 varieties have already been registered. From now, importance will be given to the registration of varieties that will benefit the farmers in a more quality and long lasting manner,” he said.
