CHATTOGRAM: Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC) made a net profit of Tk 720 million in 2020-21 fiscal year (FY).

BSC Managing Director (MD) Commodore Sumon Mahmud Sabbir disclosed it at a view exchange meeting with the journalists at the BSC Building on Tuesday.

The meeting was convened on the occasion of the 44th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the organisation scheduled to be held on January 27.

BSC Executive Director (Commerce) Dr Pijush Dutta, Executive Director (Technology) Mohammad Yusuf, Secretary Muhammad Ashraf Hossain, General Manager (Administration) Md Ashraful Amin, General Manager (Workshop) Md Ahsan Ul Karim, Deputy General Manager Md Ajamgir,    Captain Amir Md Abu Sufiyan, Moin Uddin Ahammed Majumder and Captain Md Mujibur Rahman attended the meeting among others.

Commodore Sabbir in his speech said BSC earned an amount of Tk 3229.7 million and spent an amount of Tk 2272.7 million in the 2020-2021 FY.

It made a net profit of Tk 720.2 million, which is 305.5 million more than the previous year, he said.

They proposed 12 per cent cash dividend for the shareholders for 2020-21 FY, said the MD.

Sabbir observed that as a nationally important organisation BSC should have some 40 to 50 vessels of different sizes considering the country’s present demand.

But, due to lack of different barriers including fund crisis such quantity of ships couldn’t be procured for the organisation, said the MD.

However, with the proper directive and active assistance of the government, different plans have been taken for developing it as a ‘mixed commercial fleet’ in a bid to explore the blue economy keeping consistency with the vision 2041 of the government, he added.
