At least 30 people were injured in a clash between protesting students and police at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) in Sylhet on Sunday.

Sources said the clash took place at 5:30pm in front of the Institute of Information and Communication Technology (IICT) building when police went there to rescue SUST Vice-chancellor Prof Farid Uddin Ahmed.

The students confined VC Prof Farid Uddin Ahmed at the IICT building to press home their three-point demand, including removal of the provost of Sirajunnesa Chowdhury hall.

Earlier on the day, the VC sought seven days from the students who have been protesting since Thursday over alleged misbehavior by Sirajunnesa Hall Provost Jafrin Ahmed.

However, the protesting students rejected the proposal and chased him as he left his office around 3pm.

Amidst the protest, Farid Uddin ran for cover in the IICT building of the university where he was confined by the students.

To release the VC, the university treasurer Anwarul Islama and the Student Welfare President Rashed Talukder tried to negotiate with the students, assuring them of accepting their demand. But the students did not agree.

At one point, the police rescued the VC by dispersing the protesters, hurling sound grenades and charging batons that left 30 people injured, including students and SUST treasurer Anwarul Islam.
