The 16th session of the 11th parliament will begin at 4:00 pm today.

It will be the first session of the New Year where President M Abdul Hamid is scheduled to deliver his speech, approved by the cabinet.

As per practice, the President delivers a speech at the House on the first day of the session of parliament each English New Year.  Parliament secretariat sources said the President would portray the government’s various development activities and future plans in his speech.

Usually, the session becomes a long one as the lawmakers get a chance to speak on the thanks giving motion on the president’s speech.

The session is likely to be a shorter one with 10 to 12 sittings due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Besides the general discussion, some bills will also be passed during the session.

Before the sitting, the Business Advisory Committee, headed by Speaker, is scheduled to sit for a meeting to fix the duration and agenda of the session.

Prime Minister and Leader of the House Sheikh Hasina is also scheduled to attend the meeting, among others.

Earlier, the 15th session of the parliament prorogued on November 28 last.
