Missing ex-DU teacher found dead

Retired Dhaka University teacher Prof Saida Gaffar, who went missing on Tuesday, was found dead in a bush in Kashimpur area of Gazipur district on Friday.

Police arrested suspect Anwar Hossain, a construction worker involved in construction of the professor’s house in the area.

Police recovered the body following information from Anwar, said Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kashimpur Police Station Mahbub-e-Khoda.

According to police, the 71-year-old professor lived alone in a rented flat in Mirzabari area of Panishail in Kashimpur. She undertook a project of constructing her own house nearby.

Earlier on Tuesday, one of her daughters came from Dhaka and filed a general diary with the police station stating that she could not find her mother in the house. The police then started an investigation into matter.

On January 11, Anwar along with his accomplices looted the house of the professor and strangled her. Then they left the body to a bush nearby. Anwar told this during interrogation, said the OC.

They have looted around Tk70,000 from the house. Police are investigating the crime to find out other goods looted from the house, the OC also said.

The body was sent to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital for autopsy.

Dhaka University Proctor Professor Golam Rabbani said Saida Gaffar taught at the Institute of Nutrition and Food Science at Dhaka University. She retired from teaching a few years ago.
